Discover what it's like to grow your own tree ferns with our cutting box!

This cutting box includes Cyathea New Caledonian Red.

The Cyathea New Caledonian Red is known for its compact size and slow growth. Cyathea cooperi 'New Caledonian Red' is a striking and attractive variety of the Australian tree fern, also known as the Scaly Tree Fern.

Tree ferns thrive in moist, shaded environments and are ideal for creating a tropical atmosphere in your garden.

Cyathea 'New Caledonian Red' is not fully hardy and is generally suited for regions with mild climates. When frost is expected, protective measures may be necessary—such as covering the plant or moving it to a sheltered location during cold periods—to prevent frost damage.

Tree ferns can reach a significant height, usually growing between 3 to 5 meters tall. However, they grow slowly, meaning it may take several years for the fern to reach this impressive height. It's important to note that growth is highly dependent on conditions such as soil quality, humidity, and light levels. Regular watering and a sheltered, shaded spot will encourage healthy growth and help the fern reach its full potential.

Tree ferns require specific care to thrive. Here are some essential care tips:

  1. Location:
Place the tree fern in a shaded area. They do best in filtered light or partial shade. Protect them from direct sunlight, especially during the hottest parts of the day.
  2. Soil:
Provide well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil. Adding organic matter like compost or sphagnum moss can help keep the soil light and airy.
  3. Watering:
Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Regular watering is crucial, especially during dry periods. Tree ferns require high humidity, so mist the fronds regularly—especially in warm weather.
  4. Frost protection:
It’s recommended to overwinter the young plants indoors.
  5. Feeding:
Fertilize during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer. Follow the dosage instructions on the packaging.
  6. Pruning:
Remove any dead or damaged fronds regularly. This keeps the plant looking neat and healthy.
  7. Humidity:
Tree ferns thrive in high humidity. In addition to misting, you can place a humidifier nearby or a shallow tray of water next to the plant.
  8. Repotting:
Only repot when absolutely necessary, ideally in spring. Choose a slightly larger pot to allow room for growth.

Keep in mind that tree ferns grow slowly and require patience. With the right care, however, these stunning ferns will become an impressive addition to your garden or landscape.
