This unique fern, called Hypolepis sparsisora, originates from South Africa, where it naturally grows along forest edges and in mountainous regions. The spores for this plant were collected directly from South Africa and propagated in the Netherlands.
Appearance & Growth
Hypolepis sparsisora is known for its finely divided, slightly arching fronds that give it an airy and delicate look. It is ideal for a shaded border, woodland garden, or as a solitary plant in a large container. Under favorable conditions, it can reach a height of about 80–100 cm.
Position
- Light: Partial to full shade
- Soil: Nutrient-rich, humus-based soil that retains moisture well but is not waterlogged
- Location: Suitable for open ground, greenhouse, or pot
A spot in dappled sunlight (for example under trees or next to shrubs) is ideal. Full sun is not recommended.
Care & Watering
This fern enjoys regular watering, especially during dry periods. The soil should not be allowed to dry out completely. If grown in a pot, make sure excess water can drain to prevent root rot. During the growing season, you can occasionally add some organic fertilizer or leaf compost for extra nutrients.
Winter Hardiness
Hypolepis sparsisora is not fully hardy in colder climates like the Netherlands. It can tolerate light frost down to around -5 °C if well protected with mulch or a thick layer of leaves. In the case of severe frost, it should be overwintered in a frost-free location. It does well in a cold greenhouse or unheated conservatory. If kept in a pot, you can easily move it indoors when night frost is expected.
