The cultivar ‘Crispa Whiteside’ belongs to the species Dryopteris dilatata, which is native to much of Europe, particularly in deciduous and coniferous forests on moist to moderately dry, humus-rich soils.

As for ‘Crispa Whiteside’ itself, this cultivar originated in the United Kingdom. It is said to have been discovered by an enthusiast named Robert Whiteside in the Lake District (England) and was subsequently cultivated into this distinctive curled variant.

Dryopteris dilatata ‘Crispa Whiteside’ is an elegant fern with beautifully curled (crispa) fresh to light green fronds. Its wavy edges and dense, upright growth make it a striking accent in shady or partially shaded areas of the garden.
