The Dryopteris carthusiana naturally occurs in the temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, including Europe, Asia, and North America. In the Netherlands, this fern can also be found growing wild — especially in moist woodlands, along stream valleys, and in shady areas with humus-rich soil. The name carthusiana refers to the Carthusian Order, as the plant was first described from monastery gardens of this order.

The Dryopteris carthusiana is an elegant and resilient fern that thrives beautifully in shady gardens. Its upright, finely divided fronds have a fresh, airy appearance, adding a sense of calm and natural charm to any setting. Compact in growth, it makes a lovely green accent among other shade-loving plants — perfect for borders, fern gardens, or as underplanting beneath trees and shrubs.

Characteristics:

  • Position: Partial to full shade
  • Soil: Moist, humus-rich, and well-draining
  • Evergreen: Semi-evergreen – retains some fronds during mild winters
  • Hardiness: Very hardy
