The Drynaria sinica, also known as the Chinese oak fern, is a striking and characterful plant that naturally grows in the forests of Southeast Asia. It lives as an epiphyte – meaning it doesn’t grow in soil, but attaches itself to trees, branches or rocks, using its distinctive nest leaves for support.

This species (also known by the name Drynaria baronii) is found in mountainous regions of China at altitudes up to 3800 meters, which indicates a good level of cold tolerance. In a sheltered garden location – for example, against a wall or under a tree – it can overwinter without problems. Just make sure the soil is well-draining, so the roots don’t stay wet during the colder months.

Care tips:

  • Light: Partial shade to full shade; avoid direct sunlight
  • Water: Keep the soil lightly moist, especially during the growing season
  • Cold tolerance: Hardy down to around –10 °C (14 °F); possibly lower with protection
  • Soil: Well-draining, humus-rich soil; also suitable as an epiphyte on bark or wood
  • Indoors or outdoors: A tropical houseplant indoors, a surprising garden fern outdoors
