The Cyathea medullaris, also known as the Black Tree Fern, is an impressive and elegant plant native to the rainforests of New Zealand. This tropical giant is a true eye-catcher and is admired by plant enthusiasts around the world for its striking black trunk and lush, arching fronds.

Cyathea medullaris prefers dappled to partial shade. In its natural habitat, it thrives beneath the forest canopy—and it will feel most at home in your garden or greenhouse in a sheltered spot, away from harsh midday sun and strong winds.

As with many tree ferns, constant humidity is key. Make sure the trunk and root ball stay consistently moist, especially during warm weather. In the ground, it prefers a rich, moist but well-draining soil. Use rainwater or low-calcium water when possible, and occasionally mist the fronds during dry spells to mimic its tropical environment.

Cyathea medullaris is not fully frost-hardy, and it can only survive winters with proper protection. Young plants are more sensitive, while mature specimens can tolerate slightly more. Protect it from frost using fleece, mulch, or let it overwinter indoors. Minimum temperature: around -2 °C, and only if kept dry and sheltered.

Cyathea medullaris is not a beginner’s fern. It’s a plant for the dedicated enthusiast who appreciates rare species and wants to add something truly unique to their collection. With its regal appearance, it’s perfect for tropical-style borders, fern gardens, or as a stunning specimen in a pot on a sheltered patio.
