Origin
Cyathea howeana originates from Norfolk Island (Australia), where it grows in humid, sheltered forest areas. In its natural habitat, this tree fern grows under the canopy of taller trees, which means it is adapted to filtered light and a consistently humid microclimate.
Characteristics
Type: tree fern
Leaf color: fresh to deep green
Growth habit: upright with a slender trunk
Growth rate: slow to moderate
Foliage structure: finely divided and decorative
Position
This tree fern performs best in a bright location with indirect sunlight. Direct sun, especially in the afternoon, can cause leaf damage. A spot in partial shade or filtered light is ideal, such as a conservatory, greenhouse, or a bright indoor space without direct sun.
Water and humidity
Cyathea howeana prefers consistently lightly moist soil. Do not allow the root ball to fully dry out, but also avoid prolonged waterlogging. High humidity encourages healthy, firm frond development and prevents drying of the delicate leaf segments. In dry indoor environments, regular misting or the use of a humidifier may be necessary.
Temperature
The ideal temperature range is between 15 and 25°C. The plant is not frost hardy and must be protected from temperatures below approximately 10°C. Draughts and sudden temperature fluctuations are poorly tolerated.
Care & maintenance
- Water regularly to keep the soil lightly moist
- Mist occasionally in dry air
- Remove old or damaged fronds to maintain a neat appearance
- Feed lightly during the growing season with fern or green plant fertilizer
