The Cyathea cooperi 'Highland Lace' is an impressive tree fern with gracefully divided fronds covered in a soft, almost woolly fuzz. This gives the plant a velvety appearance and an elegant, tropical look. New fronds unfurl in beautiful copper-toned curls, adding ornamental value at every stage of growth.

This tree fern is a cultivar of the well-known Cyathea cooperi, native to the temperate rainforests of Australia. The ‘Highland Lace’ variety stands out for its finely textured foliage and particularly decorative vein pattern. Thanks to its lush, exotic look, it’s a favorite among gardeners creating jungle-style borders, forest gardens, or shaded retreats.

Light and Care
Cyathea cooperi 'Highland Lace' thrives best in partial to full shade. Harsh midday sun can damage the delicate fronds, especially in young plants. A sheltered spot with high humidity and well-draining, humus-rich soil is ideal. Regular watering is essential, particularly during dry or hot weather—avoid letting the soil dry out completely.

Growth and Hardiness
This tree fern grows slowly but can eventually reach a height of 4 to 6 meters. As it matures, it develops a strong, upright trunk, gradually taking on the appearance of a small palm tree. In temperate climates, ‘Highland Lace’ is moderately frost-tolerant. It can withstand temperatures down to around -5°C (23°F) with proper protection from frost and wind. In colder winters, it’s recommended to overwinter the plant indoors or wrap it well with fleece and mulch around the base.

Use in the Garden or Indoors
This fern makes a stunning centerpiece in a tropical-themed garden or shaded border. It also performs well in large containers on sheltered patios. Indoors, it can thrive in bright bathrooms or conservatories, provided it receives enough humidity.

Name Note
Please note: in the plant trade, this cultivar is often incorrectly labeled as Cyathea tomentosissima. However, this name is not officially recognized. The correct botanical name is Cyathea cooperi 'Highland Lace', which is important to know for accurate plant identification.
