The Cibotium schiedei is a special tree fern that naturally grows in the humid mountain forests of Mexico and Central America.
Over time, it develops a sturdy, upright trunk. The leaves are fresh green, more finely divided than those of many other tree ferns, and spread out in a light, open crown around the trunk. Young leaves are covered with soft, golden-brown hairs, giving the plant a striking appearance.
Location
- Light: Partial shade to shade, avoid harsh midday sun.
- Outdoors: Best in a sheltered spot in the garden or on a patio, ideally with high humidity.
Care
- Water: Keep the soil evenly moist, but make sure it drains well so roots don’t sit in water. Water around the base of the trunk so the root crown stays moist.
- Soil: Use a light, humus-rich mix with good drainage.
- Feeding: Apply a light feed once a month during the growing season (spring to late summer).
- Winter: Not frost hardy. Protect from temperatures below about 5°C and overwinter in a frost-free place.
