Blechnum chilense is a distinctive fern with sturdy, upright fronds and a deep dark green colour. The plant has a robust appearance and can develop a short trunk as it matures, giving it a striking presence in the garden or in a large container.
This fern is moderately hardy. It can tolerate light to moderate frost, but protection is recommended during severe or prolonged freezing conditions. The foliage may be damaged in winter, but the plant usually resprouts in spring. A sheltered position and well-drained, humus-rich soil are essential to help Blechnum chilense through the winter.
Blechnum chilense thrives best in partial shade to full shade and prefers lightly moist soil. This makes it very suitable for borders, woodland gardens and large pots in a sheltered location.
