Blechnum capense is a beautiful, evergreen fern with an elegant and full growth habit. The fern produces long, pinnate fronds that grow upwards from the centre of the plant and gracefully arch outwards. The fresh green fronds give the plant a natural and tropical appearance, making Blechnum capense a beautiful addition to a collection of unusual ferns.


This species is native to South Africa, where it grows in moist and sheltered conditions. Blechnum capense is therefore best suited as a houseplant or for growing in a greenhouse, conservatory, or another frost-free environment. With the right care, the plant can develop into a beautiful, full fern.


Position
Place Blechnum capense in a bright location with indirect sunlight. A spot with plenty of bright, filtered light is ideal. Avoid direct, intense sunlight, especially during the hottest hours of the day, as this can damage the fronds. A sheltered location away from drafts is best.


Watering
Keep the potting soil slightly moist, but avoid allowing the roots to sit in water for prolonged periods. Water the plant when the top layer of the potting soil starts to dry out slightly. Preferably use rainwater or soft water. Make sure excess water can drain freely from the pot.


Humidity
Blechnum capense prefers higher humidity levels. Especially in a dry, heated living room, additional humidity can help keep the fronds looking healthy and beautiful. A bright bathroom, conservatory, or greenhouse can therefore be an excellent location.


Temperature
This fern is not winter hardy and must be protected from frost. During the colder months, keep the plant indoors or in a frost-free greenhouse. A stable, moderate temperature is ideal.


Potting soil
Use an airy, well-draining potting mix that retains sufficient moisture without staying wet for extended periods. A potting mix specifically designed for ferns is a good choice.
