Athyrium filix-femina 'Lady in Red' is a striking variety of the native lady fern (Athyrium filix-femina), best known for its elegant, reddish-purple stems. This distinctive coloring typically becomes more noticeable as the plant matures and establishes itself. In young plants, the stems are often still green, with the red tones developing gradually over one or two growing seasons.
The fern produces finely divided, fresh green fronds with a soft, lace-like appearance. The reddish stems create a subtle yet beautiful contrast, especially in spring when new shoots begin to emerge.
'Lady in Red' thrives best in partial to full shade, in moist, humus-rich soil. It is fully hardy and dies back in winter, re-emerging in spring. When mature, it can reach a height of 60 to 90 cm (24 to 36 inches).
This elegant fern is ideal for woodland gardens, shaded borders, or as ground cover beneath trees and shrubs. It grows in a loose, upright form and spreads slowly via underground rhizomes without becoming invasive.
