The Adiantum microphyllum is an elegant, fine-leaved fern from the maidenhair fern family. As the name suggests, this species has particularly small leaflets (“microphyllum” literally means small leaf), which together create an airy, almost lace-like plant. The thin, often dark-coloured stems contrast beautifully with the fresh green foliage, giving this fern a refined and calm appearance.
Thanks to its compact growth and subtle structure, this fern is perfect for lovers of unusual foliage plants, terrariums, plant cabinets or a bright bathroom. It is not a flashy plant, but rather a species you continue to appreciate for its delicate details.
Like many Adiantums, this species does require some attention, but with the right care it becomes a beautiful and rewarding plant.
Care – Adiantum microphyllum
Position
This fern enjoys plenty of indirect light but no direct sunlight. Strong sun can quickly dry out or scorch the delicate foliage.
A spot near a north- or east-facing window, or slightly away from a south- or west-facing window, usually works well.
Watering
This is the most important aspect of caring for Adiantums:
- Keep the potting soil consistently slightly moist.
- Do not allow the root ball to dry out completely, as the leaves can quickly dry up.
- At the same time, avoid prolonged soggy soil; ensure good drainage.
Regular small amounts of water are often better than occasional heavy watering.
Humidity
Adiantum microphyllum prefers higher humidity.
Tips:
- Mist lightly on a regular basis
- Place a bowl of water nearby
- Ideal for bathrooms, terrariums or plant cabinets
- Avoid dry air from heating or air conditioning
Temperature
Normal room temperature (approx. 18–24°C / 64–75°F) is ideal.
Protect the plant from drafts and sudden temperature fluctuations.
